The poems in this collection are a selection from the 38 I wrote while my wife, Bebe, and I were on a 2001 Victo¬ria River Cruise down the Yangtze, before the Three Gorges project covered the thousands of ancient villages resulting from its construction. What I saw and felt, particularly the encounters with the people of China, with a sense that I was traveling not just through a country but through Asian history in its many stages, I wrote about each day in my journal. The 38 poems were the result. This selection is the third and final step towards the publication of all 38. I’m grateful to Hong Ai Bai for agreeing to translate the first 10, published in Sailing the Yangtze, to Zhao Si for translating the others, Gambling in Macáu and the others here in No Cats on the Yangtze, to John Digby for providing images that complement the poems, and to John and Joan Digby for designing, editing, and publishing this chapbook in their New Feral Press. —Stanley H.
